How to Take an Order

Step-by-step guide for waiters and captains

📋 Taking an Order from Start to Finish

This guide walks you through the process of taking a customer order and sending it to the kitchen using Unavakam.

  1. Open the Orders screen Tap the Orders icon on the home screen of the app. You'll see your restaurant's table layout displayed.
  2. Select the table Tap the table number on the floor map. Available tables appear in one color, occupied tables in another. When you tap, a new order form opens for that table.
  3. Browse and add items to the order The menu appears organized by category. Tap a category to expand it, then tap items to add them. Each tap increases the quantity. For modifiers like extra spice, less oil, extra portion, or allergies, tap the item again or long-press to open modifier options.
  4. Add special notes or requests Use the Notes field at the bottom of the order to add special requests like "no onion," "serve last," or "extra hot." This note will appear on the kitchen display so the chef sees the special instructions.
  5. Send the order to the Kitchen Tap the Send Order button. The order appears instantly on the KDS (Kitchen Display System) in the kitchen, organized by cooking station. You'll see a confirmation that the order was sent.
💡 Pro Tip: For takeaway or parcel orders, tap the order type toggle (usually at the top of the order form) before adding items. This tells the kitchen to label and package it for takeout instead of plating for dine-in service.

Common Tasks

  • Edit an order before sending: Tap items to adjust quantities or remove them. Modify quantities using +/- buttons.
  • Discard an order: Tap Discard or Cancel at the bottom. You'll be asked to confirm.
  • Add more items after sending: Tap the table again to open its order, add new items, and send as an additional order. The kitchen sees it as a follow-up.
  • See order status: Once sent, your orders appear in a queue showing "In Progress," "Ready," and "Served" status based on what the kitchen marks.
