🎤 What is Voice Ordering?

Voice Ordering lets your staff place orders by speaking aloud rather than manually scrolling through the menu and tapping items. When a customer says "one butter chicken, two garlic naan, and a lassi", the waiter taps the microphone button, repeats the order in natural language, and Unavakam parses the items, quantities, and any modifiers — adding them directly to the order in one step.

This feature is built into the Mobile App order flow. It works on both table orders and quick (takeaway/delivery) orders. Voice Ordering uses on-device speech recognition, which means it works without an internet connection for transcription — though submitting the order still requires connectivity.

â–ļī¸ How to Use Voice Ordering

Voice Ordering is accessed within the order builder on the Mobile App — the same screen where you normally tap items to add them.

1

Open a table order or quick order

Start a new order from the Tables screen (tap an Available table → New Order) or from Quick Orders. The order builder screen opens with the menu list.

2

Tap the microphone button

The mic button appears at the bottom of the order builder screen. Tap it — the button turns red and pulses, indicating it is actively recording. A brief confirmation tone plays.

3

Speak the order clearly

Say the items naturally as the customer told you: "Two butter chicken, one dal makhani, three garlic naan." You can include quantities — if you say "one" or "two" before the item name, that quantity is set. If you just say the item name without a number, one unit is added by default. Speak at normal pace in a clear voice — no need to shout or use special phrasing.

4

Tap the mic again to stop recording

Tap the red mic button to end recording. The app processes what you said and displays a preview of the items it identified. This takes 1–2 seconds.

5

Review and confirm

A confirmation popup shows which items were matched and added to the order. If an item was misheard or not recognised, it is flagged — you can dismiss the voice result for that item and add it manually. Tap Confirm to apply all recognised items to the order.

6

Add more items or place the order

After confirming the voice input, you return to the order builder with those items in the cart. You can tap additional items manually, use voice again for more items, or tap Place Order to send it to the kitchen.

đŸ—‚ī¸ What Voice Ordering Can Recognise

Voice Ordering matches spoken words against your restaurant's actual menu. It understands:

  • Item names: Says "butter chicken" → adds the Butter Chicken item from your menu.
  • Quantities: "Two butter chicken" → adds 2 units. "Three garlic naan" → adds 3 units.
  • Variants: "One biryani full plate" or "one half biryani" — if your Biryani item has Full/Half variants, the variant is matched automatically.
  • Common shortcuts: "Veg fried rice" matches "Vegetable Fried Rice" even if the name is slightly different — the matching is fuzzy, not exact.
  • Multiple items in one sentence: You don't need to pause between items. "Two butter chicken, one dal, three naan, and a lassi" is processed as four separate line items.

Voice Ordering does not currently handle modifiers by voice (e.g., "no onion", "extra spicy"). If a customer has a specific modifier request, add that manually after confirming the voice input by long-pressing the item in the order cart.

📊 Voice Order Usage Limits

Each plan includes a monthly quota of voice order recognitions. A single mic recording session that adds one or more items counts as one voice order use.

Plan Voice Ordering Monthly Limit
Free Not included —
Lite Included 100 voice orders/month
Standard Included 1,000 voice orders/month
Elite Included 2,000 voice orders/month

When you approach your monthly limit, a warning appears in the Mobile App. Once the limit is reached, the voice button is disabled for the rest of the month — staff can still take orders normally by tapping items. Limits reset on the first of each billing month. To increase your limit, upgrade your plan from Billing & Plans.

💡 Tips for Best Results

💡
Speak the menu name, not a nickname. If the item on your menu is "Chicken 65", say "Chicken 65" — not "C65" or "that spicy chicken". The voice recogniser matches against your actual menu names. If your staff use abbreviations, consider adding those as alternate names to the menu item.
💡
Use voice for the bulk of the order, then tap for additions. Voice is fastest when you're capturing 3–5 items at once. For a single item or for adding a modifier, tapping is just as fast. The two modes work together — use whichever is appropriate for each part of the order.
💡
Step a short distance from the kitchen or loud background noise. Voice recognition accuracy drops in very noisy environments. In a busy open kitchen, move to the dining area before tapping the mic. The mic captures the nearest voice clearly — background kitchen sounds at a distance are filtered out reasonably well, but a chaotic immediate environment will reduce accuracy.
âš ī¸
Always review the confirmation before tapping Confirm. Voice recognition is accurate but not infallible. A missed item or wrong quantity that gets submitted to the kitchen creates more work than manually checking the popup for 2 seconds. Make it a habit to glance at the recognised items before confirming.
